If you are someone who’s hair gets extremely greasy when you skip a hair wash day, it is because you are constantly stripping your hair’s natural oils. so when you don’t wash your hair it is compensating from the lack of natural oil.

Training your hair can be a little embarrassing, since you might have to deal with a few greasy days. Luckily there are a few things you can do to extend the need of washing your hair a few more days.

What are the benefits to washing your hair less?

a woman standing outside thinking about the benefits of skipping washing her hair

If you are a busy gal who goes from work, to school, to volunteering, to dates, to the gym to shopping, okay I am totally kidding. If you are always on the go, have long hair, or just simply hate washing your hair then trying to go as many days as possible without washing your hair is a must.

1. It also cuts down on showering time, as a result, you’ll be using less water. Essentially you’re saving the planet. Look at you being environmentally friendly.

2. Washing your hair less can actually help with styling it. If you curl your hair, the curls will hold so much better. Just don’t do so on the first day you wash your hair since the curls will just fall off. Wait until your hair has a little grit so the curls hold much better.

3. This can also help you go a few more days without washing because your hair has so much volume that your hair won’t look so stringy after a few days without washing it. Washing your hair less will also train your hair to be less oily. Score!

4. Since you are washing your hair less, this will delay the need to apply hair products. If you don’t exfoliate your scalp this can affect the health of your hair since you are clogging your follicles.

If you want to learn how to drastically change the health of your hair, then read my blog post on exfoliating your scalp. Your hair will also be shinier due to your hairs natural oils and fuller since you are not wetting it before it gets a chance to be on its own.

Learn how to wash hair less to diminish hair loss and have healthy hair.

Before you start your no washing week, give your hair some extra love before you go a few days without washing it. Wash your hair at least twice to make sure it is very clean. This is not only helpful when you are going a few days without washing your hair, but it also gives your hair that really clean look.

Often times when we wash our hair we concentrate in the shampoo part but not so much in the rinsing. We stop rinsing when we stop seeing suds down the drain but go a few more seconds next time to ensure everything you just applied is completely off.

Rinse as if your are rinsing last night’s sins aways… it’s wash. Wash your sins away, isn’t it? Well, you get what I mean. When I do this my hair feels cleaner and lighter if that makes sense.

How often you should wash your hair to make it less oily depends on how often you wash your hair now. If you wash your hair every day and skipping a hair wash one day will make your hair look extremely greasy, its because you are constantly stripping your hair’s natural oils.

When you don’t wash your hair it is compensating from the lack of natural oil. Training your hair can be a little embarrassing, but there are a few things you can do to extend the need for washing your hair a few more days.

How to wash your hair less Tip #1

Dry shampoo

Dry shampoo will be your new bff. You might have to shop around to find the perfect dry shampoo for you. If you are not sure where to start, then try cult favorite Bumble and Bumble.

Just because your bff washes her hair every 5 days it does not mean you should start with that extreme. Try to extend how often you wash your hair by one more day. You need to slowly train your hair to be washed less.

There are a few things you can do to extend how often you wash your hair. Once my hair starts looking a little greasy, but not enough where it looks like I can squeeze the grease out to cook I apply some dry shampoo. It can be a little tricky to master, these are the steps I follow so my hair looks clean with volume using dry shampoo.

Go easy on this if you are not planning on washing your hair soon. If you apply too much and still go enough days without washing your hair that you will apply dry shampoo again then your hair can feel too heavy.

Although applying dry shampoo extends how often you should wash your hair, it doesn’t mean you can apply it every day. This can affect your scalp health since your follicles will get clogged. You should exfoliate your scalp at least once a week.

Stop touching your hair!

If you are anything like me you are constantly touching your hair. Especially the scalp! Why!?!?! I am constantly switching the direction of my hair, start putting my hair up but then I let my hair fall, I braid it. This speeds up how often you should wash your hair.

If you have this as a habit, I understand that it is a hard habit to break. Another would be biting my nails, but that’s a story for another day and a much less interesting one.

If I stopped touching my hair I could probably go over a week without washing my hair. Currently, I can go about 4-5 days without washing it. Yes, I am bragging a bit. I know, it’s sad I am bragging about dirty hair, but it’s all I got, ha!

Don’t over brush

If you are like me this won’t be a problem. In high school, I would hardly brush my hair and for some reason, that was something I was proud of. I seem to be proud of the worst thing huh?

Although brushing your hair is a good thing. When you brush your hair it looks more taken care of which gives you more of a put-together look. Brushing your hair also distributes your scalp’s natural oil moisturizing your hair in a more natural way.

Since it does this, you don’t want to over brush when you are trying to go a little longer in between hair washes. If you are brushing your hair a few times a day then you are distributing all of your hairs natural oil during various parts of the day, your hair will look greasier sooner. Since we are trying to extend our hair washing then this is obviously not a good thing.

There you have it. Five easy tips to learn how to wash your hair less. Just take it one day at a time and before you know it, it will be years before you wash your hair again. Okay, I am totally kidding.

There’s no right answer to how often you should wash your hair, just try to extend it as much as you can. There are plenty of benefits to washing your hair less, including shinier, fuller hair, saving water and nicer curls!
