How to pick the right dry shampoo for your hair type

Personally I really enjoy using Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo and Living proof perfect hair day. I think they do a really good job of absorbing my hair’s oils while allowing my hair to look refreshed.

When I want a little more volume to my hair then hands down I go with Oribe dry texturizing spray.

If your hair is fine then look for a dry shampoo that adds volume like Oribe dry texturizing spray or Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo.

If you have dark hair and want to try dry shampoo specifically for brunettes check out Drybar detox brunettes dry shampoo or Moroccanoil dry shampoo dark tones.

Divide your hair into sections

The first thing you should do when it comes to applying dry shampoo is to divide your hair into small sections to make sure your it gets evenly applied.

Start applying dry shampoo to the oiliest sections. There is no need to apply the dry shampoo all over your scalp since not all of it is oily. You shouldn’t have to go past your ears.

Don’t hold it too close to your scalp

Before you apply your dry shampoo, it is important to shake your spray to evenly distribute the ingredients.

When spraying dry shampoo on your scalp it is important to not spray for too long in one spot because this will cause a concentrated amount to be sprayed on one area.

When this happens, it is really hard to be able to evenly distribute the product. It is best to spray in a sweeping motion about 6 inches away from your scalp.

If you are having trouble with dry shampoo leaving white reside then you might be applying too much at one time. Apply a small amount and if needed apply more.

If you have dark hair, then you might want to look for a dry shampoo that is targeted for those with dark hair.

Really good dry shampoos for those of use with dark hair are Drybar detox brunettes dry shampoo or Moroccanoil dry shampoo dark tones.

Massage dry shampoo with your fingers

After you have sectioned off your hair and sprayed the dry shampoo it is time to massage the product in.

You will want to let the product on your hair for about a couple of minutes to allow the dry shampoo to soak up the oils of your hair.

Once the time is up massage the product with clean fingers into your scalp to allow the ingredient to soak up your hair’s oils. It is important for your hands to be clean to not add more oil to your hair.

If there is some white residue then you can go ahead and brush your hair out.

If you experience frizzy hair you might have gotten nervous. There is no need to panic, this is how I deal with my frizzy hair.

Don’t use dry shampoo every day

Dry shampoo is meant to be used to absorb the oils on our scalp and prolong our next hair wash day. It is not meant to be used every day.

I see many people apply dry shampoo on the same day that they washed their hair! DON’T DO THAT. You literally just washed your hair.

Try not to use dry shampoo more than a couple of times a week to avoid product buildup, and only when it’s oily.

Product buildup can lead to its own set of problems such as hair loss, dandruff, and overgrowth of bacteria!

I understand you want to prolong how often you wash your hair but to do that, follow these steps. You can prolong your hair wash days by following a few tips and not just relying on dry shampoo.

Only use dry shampoo when your hair is oily

This is related to what I just said above. Only apply dry shampoo to the parts of your hair that are oily. The only part of your hair that actually needs dry shampoo is the top of your scalp.

You won’t need any behind your head or the rest of your hair since that doesn’t usually get too oily.

Applying dry shampoo to hair that isn’t oily can cause your hair to become stiff, gritty, and dull since your hair’s natural oils will be absorbed.

Whether you use dry shampoo a few times a week or once a week. It is important to exfoliate your scalp to keep your scalp and hair healthy.

You can try this exfoliator which does a great job at washing your hair while exfoliating your scalp and prolonging your nail polish, score! It’s the one I use.

How to use dry shampoo for texture

If your hair is a little on the flat side then invest in a dry shampoo that has texture to add a little ump to your hair.

It is important to look for a dry shampoo that specifically says it’s for texture or volume to get the result that you are looking for.

A really good dry shampoo that adds texture is Oribe dry texturizing spray.

If you are just using dry shampoo on days that you don’t need it simply for the texture, then use a texture or volumizing spray like Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Boost Root Lifter.

Use dry shampoo at night

This is a little secret that I recently discovered. If it already has been a few days since you washed your hair and you know you will be using dry shampoo tomorrow morning, use it tonight instead.

By using dry shampoo at night you allow your hair to really let the dry shampoo do its magic.

The next morning you are going to wake up with refreshed hair. No one will know you haven’t washed your hair in a week! It will be our little secret, shhh.

Why do I need dry shampoo

I have found dry shampoo to be one of the greatest inventions when it comes to hair care. Dry shampoo can really make you look like you have your life together.

Think about it, If you see someone with really oily hair you can’t help but think that they are a mess, and maybe a little bit dirty.

So you need dry shampoo in your life if you are always on the go and can’t wash your hair that often.

Or you might simply be trying to prolong your hair washing days. Besides using dry shampoo to prolong my hair wash days I also do these things.

Before you break up with your dry shampoo for good try these tips to see if they made a difference. I wish you the best of luck because dry shampoo really is a great invention. Let me know what tip is new to you!
