What is a face roller

Face rollers are by no means new beauty tools. These paint roller looking gadgets date back to 7th century china.

These face rollers more commonly known as jade rollers or rose quartz roller (based on the material they are made from) have many benefits which I will discuss below.

I will also discuss the different materials face rollers are made from and the benefits those materials are believed to offer.

What are Jade roller benefits

1.Lymphatic drainage: Face rollers are used to help drain your lymphatic system. If you have a blank stare, don’t worry I didn’t know either what that meant either.

Allow me to explain. The lymphatic system is an extremely important part of your immune system and it helps prevent cancer.

Our body relies on the lymphatic system to get rid of toxins, bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells that can lead to cancer.

The lymphatic system contains fluid which leads to lymph nodes “ which house immune cells that kill off abnormal cells and other harmful substances” according to MD Anderson.

The fluid then goes back to the bloodstream and into the kidneys where waste is removed through our urine.

Since the lymphatic system does not have an organ to pump fluid around your body, it relies on movement. This is where the face roller comes in and helps drain the lymph fluid out.

2.Temporarily contour your face: When using a face roller you are getting rid of lymph fluid which can contour your features a bit for a short while.

So if you are wondering how to use a jade roller to contour your face, keep reading to learn how to properly use this tool.

3.Helps ease tension: We often put a lot of tension in our faces, such as our jaw, or our eyebrow area. Using a Jade roller is a great way to relax your facial muscles.

You might want to keep this in your purse for when your boss forgets you aren’t the only one that works there!

4.Decrease puffiness: If you are prone to waking up a little puffy, this beauty tool can also decrease puffiness.

This can happen if you have a high sodium diet or because of the lymph fluid getting stuck in a certain area. This can help your face look tighter and firmer.

5.Get glowy skin: You can also use it to stimulate blood flow and give your face that natural glow. Here are some other great tips to get a natural glow.

Pro tip: Put your jade roller in the fridge. The cool stone will help reduce swelling in your face.

In order to reap these benefits, you must learn how to use a jade roller correctly. I will explain how in a few minutes.

Just to be clear, these benefits aren’t permanent. I know, I know, I was bummed too. Nonetheless, I still find the jade roller to be worth it.

Different types of face rollers

Face rollers are made from different types of crystals. If you are very into crystals and their properties then read below to find out what face roller is right for you.

If you don’t really believe in that or don’t really care, any face roller will give you the benefits the face roller promises according to Suzanne Friedler a Manhattan-based dermatologist.

Jade roller: One of the most popular face rollers. Jade is a calming crystal that helps those with sensitive and irritated skin.

The jade roller is also said to help minimize wrinkles and those with loose skin.

Rose quartz roller: Rose quartz is the stone of universal love and therefore purifies the heart.

The rose quartz roller can help eliminate the impurities that are being held in your skin. This type of roller is also believed to soften fine lines and lift.

Black Obsidian: This stone is known for its powerful energy properties.

Using a black obsidian roller will help surface any imbalances within you while rejuvenating the body.

Before you get stuck on what crystal is right for your skin type, I must let you know there isn’t any scientific proof regarding the healing power of these crystals.

How to prep your skin

You can and should use your jade roller in the morning and at night, but you must prep your skin! Wash your face properly by avoiding these face-washing mistakes people often make.

Next, apply your skin care products as you usually do. If you don’t have a skin care routine or just don’t know what order skin care products should be applied then check out this post on how to apply your skincare products in the right order. You can also just use an oil or serum.

Pro tip: Always have some sort of lubrication on so you won’t pull on your skin while using a jade roller.

How to use a Jade roller

1. Start using the Jade roller on the side of your neck, right below your jaw, and roll down to your clavicle.

You will want to use the larger side for this area. Do each section of your neck 3-5 times.

2. Once you are finished with your neck move up to your chin and roll with slight pressure to your ear along your jaw and move straight down to your neck.

You are leading the lymph fluid to the exit point by doing this. Do this on both sides and move on to the next section.

3. Next, you are moving up towards your lips. You can use the large side and move from your mouth up towards your ear and repeat to the other side 3-5 times.

4. You can then move up towards your cheeks. Start on the side of your nose and roll outward towards your ear. Don’t forget the other half of your face!

5. For the under eyes you will want to use the small side and roll towards your exit point doing wide strokes. Do the same for over your eyes using the wide side on both sides.

6. After, move to your eyebrows moving horizontally towards your exit point.

7. Lastly, move to your forehead and roll out towards your hair line.

Pro tip: There is no set number of rolls you have to do in order to reap the benefits.

Pro tip #2: Always start from the center of your face and roll upwards and outwards. Never roll down your face. You don’t want to stretch it, creating loose skin and wrinkles!

How to clean a Jade roller

In order to not spread bacteria throughout your face it is important you wash it after every use with warm water and some soap.

Now whether face rollers actually help your face products penetrate your skin better is up for debate, but they do help spread your skin care products for an even distribution which is still a win for me.

For some Jade rollers seem to be a must on their self-care/ skincare regimen. While for others it seems a little gimmicky.

While there is no hard proof that jade rollers help with acne, wrinkles, or sinus relief, they do help with other stuff.

Final thoughts on Jade roller benefits

Lymphatic drainage is super important, just for that benefit alone I find the jade roller worth it. Not only that, but you can also temporarily contour your face, have a natural glow while easing the tension we create on our face.

Let me know down below if you will be adding this beauty gadget into your shopping cart, or if you think it’s just a bunch of mumbo jumbo.
