The correct skin care routine order for the morning

When it comes to the A.M You don’t want to skip your skincare routine since you want all of your skincare products to absorb into your skin through the day.

You’ll leave people wondering what your skincare game is like. Your makeup will also apply better if you have a well taken care of canvas. Makeup can only do so much for us.

1.Cleanser

First things first, is having a clean canvas. In the morning opt for a gentle cleanser that is made for your skin type. Here are my suggestions based on your skin type. You might be thinking “why do I have to wash my face if I just washed it last night?”

Well, the answer is simple, you want to get rid of the skincare products you applied last night ( more on that later) so the products you apply this morning can be easily absorbed. Another reason is that you want to clean the dirt you got from your pillow.

Yes, your pillow gets dirty from resting your back against it, from your hair laying on it after you laid on the floor etc, from dust, and so on. You also want to make sure you are using the appropriate cleanser for your skin type.

2.Toner

We have come a long way when it comes to toners. Toners were known for being drying and irritating alcohol-based liquids. Now there are toners for every skin type that help restore your skin’s PH level, moisturize your skin, or exfoliate it. Honestly, you would be surprised at all the benefits toners have.

3.Essence

This is a really important step to take if you have dry skin since this product provides added hydration. Even if you don’t have dry skin you can use this product since we can all benefit from added hydration, ahem we all want to look young.

4.Serum

Confused about what serum does? It is basically a shot of really concentrated antioxidants, nutrients, and hydration according to Cosmopolitan.

Types of serum

1. Vitamin C

If you’re not sure what serums to use I’ll talk about 2 popular ones. Vitamin C is a really good serum to use since it helps lighten dark spots and protects your skin from free radicals, so ideally wear this serum during the day.

Check out Bliss bright idea vitamin C + tripeptide. It helps with sagging skin, brighten your face, lighten dark spots, protect your skin from free radical (which cause wrinkles, yikes!), helps with skin inflammation, skin texture and offers hydration. Need I say more?

Pro tip: Avoid using vitamin c if you are going to apply benzoyl peroxide since it can make it less effective. Just use them at different times of the day, the same applies to retinol. If you have sensitive skin this might sting a little bit.

2. Hyaluronic acid

This serum is a humectant that helps draw in water and helps the skin hold on to that water which will provide lasting hydration. As a result, this plumps up your skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Did you know that hyaluronic acid can hold one thousand times its molecular weight in water?

If your skin is on the dry side you are doing a disservice to your skin if this isn’t part of your skincare routine. Now I want you to pay very close attention to this next part. If you are in a humid room and your apply hyaluronic acid, it will pull the moisture that’s up in the air and take it to your face.

I think that sounds pretty magical. Now if you have moisturizer on but are sitting in a dry room, the hyaluronic acid that is sitting on your face will pull water right out of your skin! Say what now?!

Instead of your skin being hydrated it will be drier than before you applied your moisturizer. This is especially true in the winter. Please take a deep breath. Inhale… exhale… Like most things in life, there is a solution.

Pro tip: Apply hyaluronic acid to damp skin and apply moisturizer soon after to lock all that moisture in.

Pro tip #2: You can apply both vitamin C and hyaluronic acid but always apply the treatment serum first and the hydrating serum last.

5.Eye cream

Did you know that we blink about 20 thousand times a day! For that reason, we need to care for our eye area. Now contrary to popular belief you should be able to use your moisturizer around your eye area as well.

The exception to this is if you have oily skin and your moisturizer you use is trying to combat this. If you use a moisturizer for blemish-prone skin, also avoid putting this under your eyes since it will irritate it. When you do apply eye cream only apply a pea-size amount and tap tap tap.

6.Moisturizer

This a very important step in your skincare routine skin this helps preserve your skin’s flexibility and elasticity. Yes, even if your skin is oily you still need to use moisturizer. Look for moisturizer ingredients like glycolic acid, dimethicone, hyaluronic acid, or niacinamide if you have oily skin

7.Face oil

Using a face oil helps lock in all the ingredients you just applied and keeps them from evaporating and escaping.

When it comes to the order on applying your skin care products it is really important to apply oils after everything else but before sunscreen. Since oil is thicker than the previous products and the other products can’t penetrate through oils.

8.Sunscreen

You hear this all the time but sunscreen is a must no matter how old you are or what your skin type. The sun is responsible for 90% of premature aging! The sun is also responsible for dark spots and cancer.

Here are some coral reef safe sunscreens that would be really good for you. They offer all the benefits other sunscreen offer and they protect coral reefs! There are zero reasons to skip the sunscreen, even in the winter.

How to apply skincare products

In what order to I apply my skin care products at night

When it comes to how to apply your skin care products at night, it is almost identical to your morning skincare routine with a few changes.

1.Double cleanse

It is important to wash your face twice if you are a makeup wearer. Stop making that face. If you want beautiful skin you got to put in the time chika.  To double cleanse you can use an oil, micellar water, or a face wipe. This Allure article goes into much more detail.

(I didn’t want to say it but I just know some of you will use face wipes. Please for the love of all that is good don’t use face wipes. Not only are they bad for the environment, but they also don’t clean your face very well and can spread bacteria. Instead, use this).

2.Cleanser

The first cleansing is to get rid of the day’s makeup while the second really gets in there and creates a clean surface so your other products can be easily absorbed. Before you continue make sure you are actually washing your face properly. Many of us don’t wash our face for long enough and do these damaging mistakes.

3.Toner

After you wash your face your skin’s ph levels can be off so make sure you apply toner with a reusable cotton pad (for the environment). Those have worked great for me.

4.Essence

This step isn’t essential but if you are looking to add hydration to your skin then don’t skip this step.

5.Serum- Hyaluronic acid

Speaking of hydration here is the second most popular girl in school mentioned again. Yes, you can apply this both morning and night.

6.Retinol

Now for the most popular girl in school, retinol. Yes, believe the hype. If you are concerned about dark spots, facial lines, adult acne then I think you just met your new best friend.

Before you run to the store you must first learn how to apply retinol to not damage your skin. Now if you have been contemplating buying retinol for a while then I definitely recommend Olay’s retinol.

I explain all that it has done for me in my honest Olay Regenerist retinol review.

7.Eye cream

At night we are moving and turning throughout the night. If you sleep on your stomach (try not to!) then we are folding our skin. The skin under our eyes is super delicate, which is important to make sure that area is nice and moisturized at night.

You can use your moisturizer but if you prefer to have a specific product for a specific purpose then I use Olay eye cream.

I feel it does a good job of hydrating my eyes. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money then I would suggest Neutragena’s hydrating eye gel with hyaluronic acid since it’s super affordable and hydrating.

Olay also has an under eye cream that has retinol in it, so don’t use your retinol for your face under your eyes.

8.Moisturizer

It is important to have a different moisturizer at night and not use the same one as you do in the morning. I go more in-depth about the differences between day and night creams in this post.

Now if you buy Olay’s Regenerist retinol then you are killing two birds with one stone. You are applying retinol while moisturizing that gorgeous face of yours!

9.Oil

Lastly, apply a face oil to seal all of your skin care products you just applied.

Final thoughts on How to apply your skin care products

If you just read this and thought “nobody has time for that” I have got chu covered girl. Whenever I am feeling lazy or just don’t have time to do all of these steps I do my super simple skincare routine.

This simple skin care routine still shows my skin plenty of love without spending too much time in the powder room (that is me trying to be fancy). You may not need to apply every step every day/night. See what your skin is asking for at the moment first.
