If you are not used to washing your face every day, especially twice a day (no judging) you should start putting that into practice.

The first step to getting glowy skin is cleaning your skin. Your car can’t look shiny with that coat of dust, right? Well, the same applies to your skin.

There is some debate on how often should you wash your face, but I would recommend to at least wash it before you go to sleep. If you are used to wearing makeup then please, please, please don’t go to sleep with it. Nights are made for your skin to recover, and it can’t do that with a layer of makeup on top of it.

If you are so tired that you can’t keep your eyes open any longer use a face wipe. I am not saying to only use face wipes to clean your face, you should always wash your face afterward to remove all the product you have applied. In cases where you are too tired, something is better than nothing, right?

The next day please put a new pillowcase on your pillow. Even if you wash your face the next night, the makeup that was smeared on your pillow will get on your face. It would be like you didn’t even wash your face.

If you don’t use makeup, you still want to wash away the skin care products you applied in the morning. You also gather pollution on your face from being out and about. If skincare intimidates you, then here is a very simple skincare routine to dip your toes *skin* in the water. If you wear makeup, especially on the heavier side, then it’s important to clean your face twice.

Tip #2 How to get glowy skin: Exfoliate your face

The next thing you should do to have glowy skin is exfoliate your face! Think about it, our skin sheds between 30,000-40,000 CELL per minute according to Kidshealth!

If you don’t exfoliate your face, then all that dead skin is just sitting there blocking the glow! Just to be clear, this number refers to your whole body, not just your face.

You should exfoliate 2-3 times per week if you are using a physical scrub and once a week if you are using a chemical scrub like a face peel. While you are at it, don’t forget to exfoliate your lips.  That beautiful glow of yours will be ruined with skin shedding from your lips. Not a pretty look.

Physical scrubs

I like to use L’Oréal’s pure sugar coffee scrub. It has a pretty strong coffee scent, so if you’re sensitive to smells then this might not be for you. This scrub contains finely ground Kona coffee which helps wake you up and give your new baby soft face that energized feel.

This scrub is perfect if you are experiencing tired fatigued skin. L’Oréal offers a variety of sugar scrubs such as for dry skin, clogged pores, and dull skin. The cool thing about this scrub is that you can use it on your lips too.

I also really enjoy using Teami’s Green tea facial scrub. I like this one because not only does my face feel clean after I have exfoliated it, but it also left my face feeling moisturized, hydrated and bright.

This mask contains matcha green tea which is awesome at reducing inflammation, evening skin tone, and it’s anti-bacterial. It also contains lemongrass which is packed with vitamins A and C. It helps give your skin a glow while keeping oil levels low, so fewer pimples! Yay!

Chemical scrub

As for peel-off masks I like to use Neutrogena’s pink grapefruit peel-off mask which is for acne-prone skin. It helps unclog pores from dirt, excess oil and impurities.

I also like Yes to grapefruit unicorn peel off. It is cool to put on and it contains vitamin C which helps with uneven, dull skin. So, if you are looking for a glow, this one is ideal.

Both of these peels contain grapefruit which has tons of antioxidants, vitamins, evens skin tones and fights off free radicals. You can’t really go wrong with either of these masks.

Tip #3 Get clear skin and hydrate from within

Learning how to get glowy skin is not just about the products you put on your face. If you are not hydrated within, it is going to be really hard for your skin to have a healthy glow.

Drink water every day, especially if you are a coffee girl like me. I have heard to drink 2L of water a day, but I feel you can’t really set a specific number. People have different lifestyles and different builds so it’s not a one size fits all.

I like to follow the rule to divide your weight by two and that equals the number of ounces you should drink. So, if you weigh 120lbs divide that by 2, which equals 60. Now divide that number by 8oz and that would equal 7.5 cups of water or 60 oz a day.

Of course, if you lead a very active lifestyle, or drink lots of coffee then you might want to drink more. Don’t stress about having to drink all this water if you are not used to it, start with what you are comfortable with and add more ounces each day.

Protip: I have realized that when I chug water I constantly have to go pee. On the other hand, when I drink my water slowly but consistently I go less often.

Tip #4 How to get glowy skin: Use hyaluronic acid

If you want to know how to get glowy skin then you should really consider buying products that contain this beautiful ingredient. Hyaluronic skin benefits are something you definitely want to take advantage of.

Hyaluronic acid increases hydration in the skin by bounding “to collagen on one side and links to water molecules on the other, giving skin its plumpness,” According to Allure, dermatologist Tsippora Shainhouse. By doing this, it allows your skin to be more hydrated, appear plumper and dewier.

The best thing is that all skin types can benefit from this, especially those with dry or more mature skin. This, plus drinking water is a great combo for glowy, plumper skin.

Tip #5 Go to bed early for healthy skin glowy skin

We have all heard the term “beauty sleep” but how many of us just say it to be silly and how many of us have thought about what that means? I remember telling my friends that I had to go get my beauty sleep without thinking about what that even meant.

Whenever you get a good night’s sleep, or maybe after a nap, do you ever look and feel refreshed? Well, that is because when we go to sleep our skin takes that time to restore and repair itself. If we are only sleeping a few hours at night, then our skin will start to pay, and let’s not forget about undereye circles.

Not only will our skin not be rested, but we will start to look like zombies.  When you don’t get a good night’s sleep you end up having lifeless dull skin, so let’s hit the sack early tonight okay?

Tip #6 How to get glowy skin: Moisturize your face!

If you’re still wondering how to get that glowy, skin then you can’t miss this step. Without a moisturizer, your face will not only look dry but feel dry if you have dry skin. What’s worse is that you’ll get premature wrinkles *gasp.*

There is no shame in having wrinkles when it’s time for them, but that doesn’t mean we should be okay with getting them prematurely. You know those weird faces you make sometimes? Well, get ready for those expression lines to set in without proper moisturization.

Did your mom ever tell you to no make certain faces or else it would get stuck like that? Well, she wasn’t totally lying. Apply moisturizer morning and night to replenish hydration to that beautiful canvas of yours.

In case you haven’t been told you are beautiful today, then let me, You. Are. Beautiful! So now thank your face by applying moisturizer.

If it’s in your budget, then buy one for morning and night, they each have their benefits. I talk more about the difference in my simplified skincare routine post.

Tip #7 Regularly clean your make up brushes to promote clear skin

makeup brushes

Using dirty makeup brushes can really break out your skin, and how can that glow show with acne covering it! Wash your makeup brushes once a week, I would even go as far as washing them every couple of uses, especially the ones you use to apply your foundation and concealer.

Although this step won’t give you glowy skin, not doing it can give you pimples, infections, and dull skin.

Tip #8 How to get glowy skin: Do a face massage

Woman receiving a face massage

This is something that I would have never thought about incorporating into my skincare routine. I am so glad I did though since it has tons of benefits. While researching how to do a face massage, I ran into this video tutorial

I am not exaggerating when I say that I instantly felt a difference. My face felt relaxed and felt as it had been drained. Which thinking about it, it makes sense since it was a lymphatic drainage massage.

I feel most of a difference in my chin and underneath my eye area. Since the first time I did it, I was able to become more aware of when my face feels it has tension or stress. I 100% recommend you try it out.

One thing I have been using is a jade roller which also helps with lymphatic drainage and is used similarly to the massage. Basically you want to start in the middle towards your ears it is where the drainage point is, and do each area 3 times.

A Lymphatic drainage face massage helps with reducing undereye puffiness, breakouts, and the look of fine lines. Using a jade roller helps the product you applied on your face to penetrate a bit better, so it is a good tool to have. It also helps boost circulation, enhance a glow, firm skin and more.

Tip #9 Rethink dairy for glowing skin

We have all heard that dairy is sooo bad for acne, and that could be right. If you have tried everything to get rid of your acne with no help, maybe try giving up all dairy products to see if you notice a difference.

According to womenshealthmag.com skin expert Wu says that dairy contains hormones that stimulate our oil glands and pores which causes acne. You should always contact a dermatologist when it comes to skin concerns, these are just merely suggestion to talk with your dermatologist.

Tip #10 How to get glowy skin: Apply retinol/retinoid

There are so many beauty products and ingredients that are extremely important to incorporate into your skincare routine. One of them being retinoid.

If you don’t know what is retinol I have a whole blog post about it since it really is so important. If you care about your skin, which you obviously do or else you would be here then check out this post.

Basically what retinoid does is increase cellular turnover, increase collagen production, and it’s anti-inflammatory. It also helps slow down wrinkles, helps even pigmentation, shrink the appearance of pores, and leads to firmer more youthful skin. Soo the fountain of youth?

Tip# 11 Look for brightening skin care ingredients

Want to know more on how to get glowy skin, then you should incorporate products that help give you that. Before buying a product look at their ingredient list and see if they offer ingredients that brighten your skin.

One well-known ingredient would be vitamin C. Vitamin C helps brighten and even your skin tone. According to GH Beauty Lab chemist Danusia Wnek who spoke with goodhousekeeping.com said that vitamin c blocks an enzyme that produces pigment, and therefore helps brighten skin.

Dermatologist Cynthia Price says that vitamin B3 slows down pigment production to slow down dark spots. These brightening ingredients will help add some glow to your complexion over time.

I like to use Murad face wash sine it contains essential C which removes environmental impurities and rehydrates. After I wash my face I automatically notice my face a little brighter and more awake.

Tip #12 How to get glowy skin: Get into serums and oils for the face

face oil on white counter top for glowy skin

One of my favorite products to apply to achieve glowing skin are oils! If you’re new to applying oils to your face I recommend only adding a drop or two. Any more than that and you will go from looking like a goddess, to extremely greasy.

Many oils provide benefits such as evening skin tone, reduce wrinkles, hydrate and basically protect your skin. I talk a little more about oil in my Simple Skincare routine post.

If you prefer serums that contain antioxidants that protect you from free radicals. If you’re wondering why free radicals are so bad then I will quickly explain.

Basically free radicals seek to grab an extra electron from the atoms in your skin in order to feel “whole” again which can speed up aging. You can learn more about free radicals on the Today website.

Serums can penetrate the skin much easier than face creams and are much lighter, so a little goes a long way. After applying your oils or serums, go over it with a jade roller so it can be absorbed better.

Tip #13 benefits of clay mask

Another product to add to your skin care routine is clay masks. Clay mask is great at softening skin, detoxifying, brightening, regulating sebum production and more. This one product provides tons of benefits, so having it be part of your skin care routine is a good idea.

I personally enjoy using Sand and Sky Australian Pink Clay mask. Just beware that it does tingle a little when applying. I think this may have to do with the fact that it dries fast and stiff on the face. This mask is a pore fining face mask that helps detoxify and brighten the skin, which is a win to me.

Tip #14 How to get glowy skin: Wear sunscreen

You might be tired of hearing about sunscreen all the time, but there is a reason it’s mentioned so much. Not wearing sunscreen can cause sunspots, discoloration, premature wrinkles and cancer!

If there ever is a product that you put on your face, make sure it’s this one. There are chemical sunscreens and mineral sunscreens so choose one that best fits your needs.

If you want to know a little more about what sunscreen to buy and which one is best for you, check out this blog post, I go pretty in-depth about each kind.

That’s it! Some of these tips don’t require any extra products and the others you probably already have. Of course, you can always use makeup to fake the glow, but nothing is better than having a well-taken care of face. Besides, makeup can only do so much for you.
