Picture this, the wind is blowing your hair to your face. You hand your pumpkin spice latte to your other hand so you can move your hair right out of your face. Yes, Fall is here! “Do a little dance, make a little love…” whoo got a little too excited there. Summer is out but you have 91 days of fall to enjoy.
To be the best version of yourself you need to take care of yourself first no matter how busy you get. There are so many great things to do this time of year that I am going to share with you 31 self care things to do in fall.
1. Take a walk
Take a walk around your neighborhood, or go to a nice park and enjoy the crunch of each leaf as you enjoy the cool air. Taking a walk not only gets you moving, but it gives you the opportunity to clear your thought if you are alone. If you prefer a buddy, it can also serve as bonding time!
2. Look for a leaf
I am a sucker when it comes to trees and leaves. I always like to spot trees that have a nice shape, and when its fall I like to look for the biggest leaf I can find in the most unique color or pattern. It is such a simple thing to do in fall, but it brings out the kid in you.
3. Decorate your home or space for fall
Personally, I feel holidays and seasons go by so fast. I remember being a kid and feeling like time just went by slower.
One way I have found to make time freeze just a tiny bit is to decorate your home or room at the beginning of the season.
For example, take Halloween, if you don’t decorate or just celebrate Halloween on the 31st then it will go by in a blink of an eye.
If you start decorating at the beginning of October, watch scary movies throughout the month, and carve pumpkins, the holiday will slow down a bit. This if course applies to any holiday. Immerse yourself in the time of year you are in the moment.
The decorations can be as simple as adding some festive pillows, a fake pumpkin, or some string lights. Honestly, there are so many cute things to buy, it just depends on your style and budget
4. Buy some candles
Did you know that smell is our most memorable scent? Buy some candles that remind you of fall and start making some memories. The next time you smell this candle again it might take you back to some good times.
Candles are also good at helping you relax and bring a smile to your face, especially when you do that first inhale. If you are not sure where to start, Yankee candles have a really good fall selection. Some of their scents include Autumn Wreath, Spiced Pumpkin, Sparkling Cinnamon, and just a ton more.
5. Drink some hot chocolate
If you are a fan of chocolate now you can drink it in hot liquid form. I too am very excited about this. Drinking hot chocolate makes you feel all cozy inside while having the best thing in the world… chocolate.
Personally I grew up drinking Abuelita chocolate and it is just the best. If you haven’t tried it before, you are honestly missing out. Promise me you’ll give it a try.
6. Buy a festive mug
What good is it drinking your hot chocolate or coffee or tea if its just in your same old mug. There is something about drinking from a cute mug that makes the drink even more delicious.
If you want one that fits the Halloween vibe, this one is perfect. If you are looking for a more general fall mug, check this classic one out. Is your favorite holiday thanksgiving? You will want this mug for sure.
7. Go to the pumpkin patch as a self care thing to do in the fall
Being at a pumpkin patch makes you fall for fall, ha get it? It really makes you feel like you are living through the season. The best thing about going to the pumpkin patch is getting some kettle corn.
Honestly, that is the only reason I go. The pumpkins can be on the pricy side so if you like to be money savvy go to your grocery store instead.
8. Carve a pumpkin
You had to have seen this coming as I just mentioned going to a pumpkin patch. Be prepared to get messy but it is well worth it.
If it is your first time carving a pumpkin, then I must let you know there are some carving tools you should buy to make the carving a little easier. The first time I carved a pumpkin it was a total mess since I didn’t have any of the carving tools or any stencils. I know I know I should have prepared.
9. Make S’mores
One of the most delicious things to do in fall is making S’mores. “So more of what?” For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, watch the movie The Sandlot, it’s a classic.
If you have no idea what a s’more is, I will let Ham from The Sandlot explain “first, you take the graham. You stick the chocolate on the graham. Then, you roast the mallow. When the mallow’s flaming, you stick it on the chocolate. Then you cover it with the other end.” Make the night even better by having a campfire along with it.
10. Watch a scary movie
If work or life has been stressing you out, you might want to let out a few screams. A sane way to do it is to watch a scary movie.
If you don’t like scary movies then watch the scary movies from the ’80s and ’90s, those aren’t scary but they do get you in the Halloween mood. If that’s not your style, watch some Halloween type moves like the classic Hocus Pocus or Halloween town.
11. Bake
Another cost effective self care thing to do in the fall is to bake. If you are not a baker then look for an easy recipe or something that’s already premade. This is supposed to be a self care activity so take your time and try your best not to stress out.
12. Doing a morning stretch outside
Personally, I think going outside in the morning is the best time to be outside. The air feels much cleaner, you can hear the birds chirping, and it’s nice and fresh outside.
Of course, this depends on where you live but if what I said applies to you then give it a try. When you are outside do a few stretches, some meditating or simply taking a deep breath and acknowledge how amazing and blessed you are.
13. Make some cute fall outfits
If you have different clothes for different seasons now is the time to take out your fall/ winter clothes. Spend an afternoon putting some outfit ideas. Just thinking how cute you’ll look in each outfit will help give you a boost of confidence.
14. Have a movie marathon
Make a list of your favorite movies or movies you have been meaning to watch but haven’t. Grab your baked good and your hot chocolate in your new mug and snuggle up in your blanket. It’s such a relaxing self care thing to do in the fall.
15. Make a fall playlist
What is a fall playlist? I mean make a playlist that fits the fall vibe, whatever that means to you. Look through YouTube and fall in love with some new music.
16. Do a puzzle
Doing a puzzle reminds me of a time before cell phones, streaming services, and social media. It reminds me of a simpler time with VCRs and chunky sweaters.
Travel back to simpler times where you didn’t have a care in the world and work on a puzzle. Maybe once you finish with it you can frame it! While you are doing your puzzle play your new playlist and make the day even more relaxing.
17. Clean out your space
Maybe this doesn’t sound like the most fun self care thing to do in fall, but it really can help clear your mind. If nothing is in its place this can lead to feeling overwhelmed at home.
Take a day or two or three and look to see and what things you don’t use, don’t need, or forgot you had and give them away, donate them, or sell them.
18. Have a spa day
Do your nails and paint them a nice fall color, your toes too! Grab your favorite hair and face mask, light up your new fall candle, and play your new fall playlist, and enjoy.
19. Go on a hike
Look for some hiking trails to go on a hiking date by yourself or with a loved one and enjoy nature. Take a picture to remember the trip.
20. Make candy apples
Have some fun getting creative while you do some candy apples. You can add your favorite toppings and pretend its healthy since you are technically eating and apple.
21. Make so pumpkin dessert.
This is the only time of year where you can really enjoy pumpkins, so why not go crazy with it. Make some pumpkin bread, some pumpkin pie, and use those pumpkin seeds and roast them for an actual healthy snack.
22. Go on a picnic
Take the delicious desserts you just made along with some actual food, head to your favorite park, and have a picnic with nature or your favorite person
23. Go camping
Camping is also a great self care thing to do in the fall since you really get to do something out of your norm. It allows you to escape your reality and get to know a different side of you.
If you don’t find camping all that fun, then why don’t you do it in your back yard. This way if you need to use the restroom you can just run inside.
24. Do some arts and crafts
Let the creative side of you and come out and have some fun. Take out some paint brushes and don’t be afraid to get messy. If painting is not your style, then perhaps try making a fall wreath to put outside your door.
25. Go to a corn maze for a fun self care thing to do in fall
This is another must to do during the fall. Buy your kettle corn and get lost in the maze. Don’t forget to take some pictures to freeze time!
26. Go to a thrift shop
Go to your local thrift shop and look for all the fun, crazy fall looking sweaters you can find. It’s cheap, environmentally cautious and perfect for sweater weather.
27. Buy a book
I feel that the older we get the fewer books we read, which is a shame. Recently I started reading again and it brought me back to a time where I couldn’t wait for the next day to continue reading.
If you are not the biggest fan of reading you might not have found the right book. Look for one that sounds very interesting to you to get you excited. Don’t just look at fiction books, maybe you want to learn something new, or get motivated, there are books for anything.
If you need some suggestions, one of my favorite fiction horror books is The Fifth Child. If you want something that will motivate you, I really enjoyed Girl Wash your face.
28. Buy some funky socks
Put away all your plane colored socks and go look for some that fit the fall season. Wearing funky socks is an easy way to lift your spirits.
29. Make a fort
This is the ultimate childhood throwback. Grab some blanket, pillows, snacks and read your new book or have that movie marathon we talked about.
30. Look at old photos
Scroll through your phone, or take out your childhood photo album and look through all the old pictures. Check out your mom’s old hairstyle or your sister’s outfit. Remember things that you completely forgot had happened. It’s such a fun and beautiful way to reminisce.
31. Scrapbook
If you have a lot of patience and enjoy getting creative, then I suggest printing out your favorite pictures and doing a scrapbook. It can be a lot of fun and you will be proud of how cute you made your scrapbook look when you are finished.
There are dozens of selfcare things you can do this fall that don’t just involve doing a hair mask and journaling. If it puts a smile on your face, and helps you relax for a bit then it is self care. What self care thing to do in fall are you looking forward to doing?
